The way James thinks today has been shaped through distinct chapters — each adding another lens on how businesses work, how technology creates value and how people turn ideas into execution.
THE EXPERIENCE ARC
01EARLY FORMATION
Learning Business from the Inside
Family business
Business was something experienced before it was studied. Early exposure meant seeing the direct relationship between customers, people, money, operations, decisions and ownership. It created a practical respect for the fact that every choice has consequences — and that an idea only matters when it works in the real world.

Learning to See Systems
EDS
EDS provided the systems foundation. Through the Systems Engineering Development Program and work in the United States and Australia, James learned the value of process, technology, operating discipline and dependency. Individual components only make sense in the context of the whole they serve. That experience remains an origin point for a simple conviction: see the whole enterprise before choosing what to fix.

Connecting Technology to Business Value
A.T. Kearney · Strategic Information Technology Practice
At Kearney, systems and technology became part of a larger business conversation: strategy, operating models, business architecture and change. The thread that began there has remained useful ever since. Technology matters because of what it enables the business to do better — not because it sits beside the business as a specialist topic.

Twenty-Five Years of Putting Ideas to Work
Fundamental Business
Fundamental Business became the long period of practical synthesis. The recurring work has been helping leadership teams step back from day-to-day activity, see their businesses more completely, set direction, shape priorities and make complex situations visible. The Fundamental Pyramid®, Fundamental Grid®, Greenhouse Framework® and Fundamental Storyboarding® emerged through real use: as ways of creating shared language and converting useful discussion into action.
AI is the latest important technology to examine through an established business lens. Earlier technology strategy work, the 2018 News Corp Australia enterprise AI work and current practical experimentation all lead to the same questions: where can it create value; what needs to change in the business; what capabilities are required; how will people use it; and how will we know it is working? The focus is workflow, governance, human judgement, adoption and measurable outcomes.
Work across Australia and international settings, with organisations navigating change, growth, complex operating environments and technology-led opportunity.
